The staff at Saint Paul Health Center received their third SHARP certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Washington, DC in March, 2011.
OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, or SHARP, is the Department of Labor’s premier national recognition program for small business safety excellence.
SHARP is difficult to earn and harder to keep as it requires onsite audits and documented, sustained safety performance well above OSHA compliance. There are less than 1000 active SHARP companies in the entire country and just 42 in Colorado.
St. Paul continues to go well beyond OSHA compliance with employee involvement, training, PPE, engineering controls, and emergency action preparedness. The management team at St. Paul has developed a strategy to address patient behavior towards its staff. The focus has been on training its employees in anger management, stress management, and techniques for de-escalating aggressive behaviors. Social service intervention identifies and tracks patient behaviors for signs of intensification. Regular periodic inspections are conducted. The staff at St. Paul is active in hazard identification. Management commitment to employee safety remains a cornerstone of operating philosophy at St. Paul Health Center.
Saint Paul Health Center partnered with Colorado State University’s OSHA Consultation Project in 2006 in order to improve their safety and health programs, reduce their injuries, and reduce costs due to injuries. OSHA’s Safety and Health Consultation program is a voluntary and cooperative service between OSHA and small businesses in all 50 states.
Saint Paul Health Center’s SHARP award will be posted on the DOL/OSHA national website (www.osha.gov) under SHARP.
Saint Paul Health Center is managed by Colavria Hospitality. Colavria Hospitality has been managing and consulting in Skilled Nursing Facilities, Rehabilitation, Assisted Living and Independent Living communities since its inception in 2004.
